A visit to the Potami Waterfalls is one of the most fun and refreshing things you can do on Samos. It’s a mix of nature, adventure, and beauty — all in one unforgettable walk. With cool, flowing water, lush green forests, and a bit of hiking fun, it’s the perfect place to escape the summer heat.
A Fairytale-like place
The name Potami means “river” in Greek. A gentle stream winds through the forest, leading to a series of small but beautiful waterfalls. The biggest one drops into a clear, cold pool enclosed by impressive rock walls. To actually see the waterfalls, you will have to take refreshing dip and wade or swim to the first drop.
Some say the waterfalls have a bit of magic in them. A local legend tells of a fairy who lived by the water and appeared only to those with a pure heart. Maybe you’ll get a chance to see her?
You start your Potami Waterfalls adventure at Potami beach. A clear sign will tell you where the trail begins. The peaceful path leads you along the stream, shaded by giant trees. Wooden bridges and stepping stones guide you through the forest. At the end of the path wou will find a pool of water, dissapearing between high rock walls. This is where the real adventure starts!
To actually see the Potami waterfalls, you’ll need to wade through the water to the first one. In order to reach the higher waterfalls, you can use the rope ladders in place and climb you way up! It’s part of the fun!
Tip: Bring your swimsuit, a towel and a small dry bag if you want to carry your phone or valuables!
At the top, you’ll find the Archontissa Adventure café, built right above the falls. A a great spot to relax and enjoy the magnificent view. If you don’t want to get wet, you can also reach the cafe by using the adventurous wooden stairway at the pool base and climb your way up there.
The Church of Metamorphosis
Don’t miss the Church of Metamorfosis (Transfiguration) on your way to the Potami waterfalls. You’ll pass it at the beginning of your walk.
This church is very old — dating back to the 11th century, and has recently been restored. Have a look inside, light a candle, and enjoy the calm before heading into the forest toward the waterfalls.
