Tucked into the green hills near Koumaradei village, the Monastery of Megali Panagia is one of the most beautiful and peaceful spots on the island of Samos. It’s also one of the oldest. If you’re looking for a mix of history, faith, and stunning scenery, this is the place to visit.
A Historic and Holy Site
The monastery was founded in 1586 by two monks, Neilos and Dionysios, who were looking for a quiet place to pray and live a simple life. They chose this lovely spot in the mountains, surrounded by pine trees and far from the more occupied areas of the island.
Over the years, Megali Panagia became one of the most important religious centers on Samos. It played a big role during Ottoman times and even helped protect local traditions and language.
The name Megali Panagia means “Great Virgin Mary” — and the monastery is dedicated to her. Every year on 15 August, a big celebration takes place here for the feast of the Virgin Mary.
Legends and Local Stories
According to local stories, the icon of the Virgin Mary inside the church has healing powers. Pilgrims come from all over Greece to light a candle, say a prayer, and ask for help.
Another legend says that when pirates attacked the island, monks managed to hide the treasures of the monastery deep inside the nearby forest. Some people still search for them today!
What Makes It Special?
- The main church is stunning, with beautiful wood carvings and an old iconostasis (altar screen).
- There’s a peaceful courtyard full of flowers and shady spots.
- A small shop displays old books, religious clothing, produce from the monastery and sacred items.

A visit to Megali Panagia is like stepping into another time. Peaceful, spiritual, and full of stories, it’s a place that leaves a lasting impression.
